KL Hosts First QapthutS’ul’eluhw Elders Gathering

October 2nd, KL proudly hosted our first-ever Qapthut S’ul’eluhw Elders Gathering, welcoming over 150 Elders from our member Nations. This special event was filled with reunions and new connections, celebrating the strength of our communities and culture.

Elders enjoyed a range of activities including workshops with guest speakers, receiving helpful information and resources and from the many wellness service providers such as pranic healers (healing touch), tarot card readers, massage therapists, on-site podiatrists, and Geezer Grease. Central Vancouver Island Literacy provided information on their range of services while the Elder’s College promoted ongoing education as well as seeking Elders’ input into guest speaker opportunities and relevant topics.

The crafting and games room was busy throughout the entire day with participants taking time to create their own Devil’s Club and beaded necklaces, wooden medallion necklaces as well as making their own customized bath salts with some assistance and support while visiting with family members/relatives and friends.

In the Portrait Room, local photographer Dirk Heydemann took photos of singles, couples and groups. Many elders shared that they had not had a portrait taken in years and were so appreciative and enjoyed holding several poses and capturing this special moment and opportunity. The day was full of visiting, connection, sharing stories and smiles with much positive feedback. Said one KL staff member: “I saw many times how happy Elders were to see their relatives or friends from the other Nations. I saw them embrace one another, express their happiness to see each other and I heard them giving each other updates, sharing stories and laughter.”

“I enjoyed the opportunity to visit, connect and catch-up with other relatives and friends from the area. I also went from booth to booth to learn about all the services that we can access. I feel more grounded and at peace, it was a great day and gathering.” shared another participant

The event was planned and organized with direct input and support from our member Nations, to ensure that the event would be accessible, relevant, and meet the needs of the Elders. We raise our hands to all of the workers from our Nations who helped to promote the event within their communities, and who assisted with transportation and on-site support.
